Lately I’ve been sprucing up my collection of software applications, and spending time with some good online tutorials on my favorites. Many of these tutorials are free, and in this post, I’ll round up several that I’ve found worth paying attention to. Are you a Photoshop user? Good-Tutorials has a great collection of tutorials on effects, filters and more. They’re all free, and easy to follow. I am hooked... to WorldWide Telescope! I love Google Sky and am an avid fan of it, but this new software from Microsoft Research kicks it all up a notch. WWT gives access to images of the sky from various different databases including the DSS optical, infrared and even the WMAP microwave imagery in a really slick, smooth interface. I've spent a good few hours today browsing through the sky, literally, and reading up. Here is an image of the Orion belt I snapped from WTT. These three stars are

It seemed likely that we'd see a similar application which would bring a blitzkrieg of media from similar sites to your desktop. “Gold is in your mailing list.” You’ve heard many veteran internet marketers and established gurus preach these very words time and time again, and for good reasons at that. It has been established as a fact that most of your sales would come after the 4th to the 8th contact. This is accomplished through an opt-in list. An opt-in lis

Think back 10 years. Think about what you had to do to have photos or business cards printed. Although some businesses were offering such services online, we just weren’t a fully digital society then. And that was just ten years ago. Most people have digital cameras and high speed internet and at least a simple version of design software these days. So, the printing industry has stepped up to meet the digital call. There are quite literally thousands of websites where you can get photos printe

I found this comment on Reddit and it’s worth repeating. I don’t usually post someone else’s words as the entire content of my post. But this really sums up my feelings about the term “software development crisis”. http://reddit.com/r/programming/info/6j1mf/comments/c03zf02 I’m sorry, but this is just nonsense. People are forever coming along and proclaiming that software engineering is in a state of crisis. And always their reasoning is that (other) programmers aren’t smart enough. They,
